MARCH 2008 NJCEIA presented at the CEIA conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on March 10, 2008. Amy Bravo, Victoria Nauta and Laszlo Pokorny presented, “Can We Develop Employee Citizens? NJCEIA Student of the Year Award - Nomination applications are now available online. Share a link to the NJCEIA site with students, employers and faculty partners who might be interested in nominating a student. Entries must be submitted by April 18, 2008. Membership - One of our goals this year was to expand membership and that we did! Membership renewal reminders will go out in May. If you know of any colleagues or employer and community partners who might be interested in getting involved, please share with them a link to our site, www.njceia.org or contact VP for Membership, Sue Pye at spye@rci.rutgers.edu.  This year we have two Honorary Members. An honorary member is someone who has served as president of NJCEIA and is now retired from the field. Honorary members are not required to pay annual membership fees.

Archival Committee - This year we are committed to honoring our past and embracing our future. The NJCEIA Archival Committee has been diligently working to connect with all NJCEIA past presidents in an effort to develop our Association’s history. We will be highlighting some of NJCEIA’s accomplishments at the June Student of the Year Awards ceremony. If you have any information you’d like to share, please contact NJCEIA Archival Committee Chair, Barbara Gross at bgross@middlesexcc.edu.

OCTOBER 2007:  The general membership unanimously approved the proposed amendments to the NJCEIA constitution during the October 25, 2007 meeting at NJIT.  Congratulations to Patty Stoudt, our new VP for Awards and Recognition; to Barbara Gross, Chair to the new Archival Committee and to all retired past NJCEIA presidents who have been conferred honorary membership.  To read the amended constitution, click on Mission & Constitution in the sidebar.   New NJCEIA membership form for Employers

MARCH 2007:  It is time to think about our June meeting when we will present the Student of the Year awards. You can find your nomination packet here along with the cover letter and criteria sheet. The Deadline for the nomination packet to be returned to my attention is April 20, 2007. Please note that late entries and incomplete entries will be disqualified.

I'm also seeking volunteers, from both two-year and four-year schools, to serve as readers. Please call or email me ASAP if you are interested. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize outstanding students and I look forward to your continued support.

Did you know that several member shcools will be attending and presenting at the CEIA National conference in April?  The 2006 CEIA Annual Conference and Centennial Celebration will be held April 23-25, 2006 at the Hotel Cincinnati Netherlands Plaza, Cincinnati, OH - http://www.ceiainc.org/

Mid-Altantic Co-op Education and INternship Conference.  September 27 - 26, 2006 at Atlantic Sands HOtel and Conference Center, Rehoboth BEach, DE.

 

SEPTEMBER 2005:  Welcome to new NJCEIA member Caitlin Hearn.  Caitlin Hearn has joined The Career Center at Seton Hall University as an assistant director for experiential education. Caitlin works with students in various academic departments within the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as the College of Nursing, and the School of Graduate Medical Education. Understanding the value of encouraging and empowering students to supplement their education with programs and activities that will promote personal and professional development, Caitlin is an advocate for experiential education opportunities . She hopes to spend her time here providing students with the tools and support necessary to succeed as they move through their collegiate experience.

Caitlin received her BA in Psychology and Sociology from the State University of New York at Geneseo and her M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
 

AUGUST 2005:  On August 9th in White Plains, New York, NJCEIA's Vice President for Programs, Victoria Merkel co-presented at EACE's Annual Professional Development Conference. The title of this year's conference was, "INVEST 2005: Innovation, Networking, Value, Excellence, Strategies and Training."

Victoria Merkel and Elisa Varon, Assistant Directors of Experiential Education at Seton Hall University; Sandy Figeroa, Coordinator of the Business Department at Hostos Community College and Rebecca Hoda, Director of Career Services of Hostos Community College co-presented, "It Takes a Village: Forming Relationships with Faculty to Promote Student Success." This program discussed ideas for faculty collaboration using best practices from Seton Hall University and Hostos Community College. Examples of innovative programming include professional development training, faculty/ employer networking activities, career events, classroom presentations, relationship building, student organizations and advising.

NOVEMBER 2004: The Cooperative Education Program celebrated its 30th anniversary in collaboration with the Alumni Association at a reception and recognition program on May 1, 2004. Co-op alumni from all classes were invited to join staff, supervisors and faculty advisers to commemorate the program’s three decades of excellence, share their achievements, network and contribute to Co-op's future. The Cooperative Education Fund for the Future (CEFF) was established in 2004 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Co-op Program. Through the gifts of the MSU Co-op alumni, CEFF will fund projects that address Community needs and advance the civic and professional development of students. By building in the resources and partnerships established by the Co-op Program, this fund will serve as a catalyst for community engagement, support experiential education projects, highlight campus-community achievements and encourage institutional change to support the scholarship of engagement.

Freyda Lazarus of the Center for Community-Based Learning co-authored a chapter on "Administering a Cooperative Education Program" in the recently released International Handbook for Cooperative Education published by the World Association for Cooperative Education, Boston, Mass. The handbook contains contributions from 52 authors and leading researchers worldwide and is intended to become a major resource for those interested in the practice and research into work-integrated learning. This year the handbook will be translated into Japanese.
